his people so that they might learn to flee to him for forgiveness of their sin. Through the opening of the Scripture unto them Jesus opens up to them the meaning of the law, and of themselves as sinners, as breakers of the law, as under the wrath of the covenant God, and of himself as the one who would be “led as a lamb to the slaughter” (Is 53:7).
